Anthropic reportedly signs $517 billion in compute deals after Dario Amodei warned rivals about reckless risk

7 September 2026 at 18:12

Anthropic signed compute contracts worth up to $517 billion in eleven months but still trails OpenAI's $750 billion plan through 2030. In early 2026, CEO Dario Amodei warned against investing too fast. Now Anthropic is racing to catch up, while Sam Altman warns about "unsustainable silliness" in the compute buildout, especially from neo-cloud providers.

Anthropic opens Claude AI text detection to regulators, media, fact-checkers, and others

1 September 2026 at 20:40

Anthropic is launching an API that lets regulators, media outlets, and researchers check whether text carries Claude's digital watermark. The EU AI Act now requires invisible watermarks in AI-generated text. Critics warn the technology could hurt text quality and create transparency problems where contracts ban AI use.

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 promises better coding and research at up to 45 percent less

1 September 2026 at 20:32

Anthropic launches Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, its most capable AI models yet. Fable 5.1 doubles its predecessor's score on Terminal-Bench-Science and improves agentic coding by over 30 percent. Costs drop by up to 45 percent for long, autonomous runs with many tool calls.

Anthropic's Claude Code limit change is a raise on paper but a cut in practice

30 August 2026 at 09:05

Anthropic is effectively cutting Claude Code's weekly usage limits by 17 percent. A temporary 50 percent boost expires on September 14 and will be replaced by a permanent 25 percent increase. Anthropic promises more control and transparency over usage in return.

Sony and Warner sue Anthropic over "one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history"

30 August 2026 at 08:50

Sony Music, Warner Music, and other publishers are suing Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei personally for allegedly using tens of thousands of copyrighted musical compositions to train Claude without permission. The plaintiffs call it "one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history." Just months after paying $1.5 billion to settle with book authors, Anthropic faces another major copyright fight.

Anthropic wants to do for physical hardware what its Model Context Protocol did for software

29 August 2026 at 09:14

A data cable connects an abstracted server network to a microscope, a robotic arm, and other laboratory equipment.

Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard (MHS) gives AI agents a unified interface to physical devices like robotic arms and lab instruments. In early tests, integration time dropped from weeks to hours. But Claude sometimes failed to grasp physical cause and effect, so human oversight remains essential for now.

U.S. court rules Pentagon's blacklisting of Anthropic was unlawful

28 August 2026 at 11:43

A federal court in San Francisco has ruled that the Pentagon unlawfully classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk. The Department of Defense blacklisted the company in retaliation for its public criticism of government AI policy. The designation formally remains in place because a parallel case in Washington is still pending. The ruling still sends an important signal ahead of Anthropic's planned IPO this fall.

OpenAI and Anthropic in price war as Chinese AI rivals gain ground

14 August 2026 at 14:27

Leading US AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic are releasing cheaper models as they fight to retain cost-conscious customers who are switching to cut-price alternatives from Chinese rivals.

The price war comes as rising AI bills push companies to curb usage and seek cheaper models, helping Chinese developers including Moonshot and DeepSeek make inroads with users from Silicon Valley to Europe.

OpenAI recently said that it was slashing prices for GPT-5.6 Luna, its β€œfastest and most affordable model”, by 80 percent. Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, touting the system’s β€œfrontier intelligence... at half the price” of Fable 5, the company’s most capable model.

Claude published malicious code to the Internet and attacked 3 real companies

31 July 2026 at 20:39

Anthropic said its Claude-based security models gained unauthorized access to the sensitive production environments of three outside organizations during internal testing designed to measure the models’ offensive cyber capabilities.

The events, which Anthropic revealed Thursday, are the second revelation in 10 days that AI models from the world’s wealthiest providers have trespassed into protected networks, an offense that, in more traditional hacking scenarios, could land the human behind the keyboard in prison for years. Earlier this month, OpenAI said its security models exploited a zero-day vulnerability for use in breaking into the network of Hugging Face, a platform for open source machine-learning models and AI datasets. The OpenAI models went on to steal access credentials and other confidential Hugging Face information. The OpenAI models also exploited publicly exposed credentials to compromise accounts of four other third-party services.

Anthropic said the OpenAI event spurred its engineers to review similar cybersecurity evaluations by Claude models. The audit found three incidents β€œin which a model accessed the internet from within or while interacting with the evaluation environment of Irregular, one of our third-party evaluation partners, and then gained unauthorized access to the production infrastructure of three different organizations.”
